Hi Steven,
I totally agree. I did see that article on BBC breakfast, and my humble opinion is finders keepers.
Personal examples being :
As a child, myself & grandfather hauled an empty 50gallon metal drum away from the sea front, in order to tidy the beach up, and converted it into a nice water butt for the watering of plants.
It amazes me that they did not mention "salvage"
I once, when living in the Mid East, came across a fellow Boatie, who needed a tow into harbour. I found that in marine law, had I tossed a rope to him, it was still his. However, he threw a rope to me. "That," I spake "means that your boat belongs to me".
It is daft, if folks are clearing up the flotsam on our beaches, fair play to them.
Goodly point.
Bob.

No one who has goods in those containers that have come off the ship will ever see any of it again. The insurance company(s) will decide either to dump or sell off by tender. Sad but true. Ever tried to trace a lost delivery?
As long as goods are not taken off the actual ship no one is breaking the law by scavenging. It is only the Corporate vultures trying to stop Joe public having any benefit for once saying that.
THAT is why the police were NOT stopping anyone & advising that good should be declared to the receiver of wrecks.
They have only stopped the peolpe from outside that area now because the media hype was turning the whole stupid & heavy recovery plant is now being moved onto the beach.

Yes, if it's unclear about who's stuff it is anyway. If however there were cargo boxes of people's goods that were being moved to a new house (say), and it could be proven that it was there belongings then it should be returned to them. Otherwise, it's just a different form of beach cleanup - it's just this time the junk is actually worth something.

Legally, they are supposed to fill out a form, just in case the owner of the property should want it returned.
That said, as the Police took no notice and let people go ahead with their "activity", then so be it. Its a matter for the individuals conscience as to whether its right or wrong. I believe it to be wrong.

Only if they do a bit of tidying up before scampering off with their good. The beach is a complete tip now and these human vultures are not helping things much.

Yeah good luck to them!!
Stores aren't gonna sell the soiled goods anyway even if they aren't ruined so its better that someone gets some use out of them instead of them just being destroyed
