specifically, can I buy it at a normal booze distributor (say, a gas station) and if so, what are the brand names?

You should be able to find cider at a liquor store. or perhaps at some supermarkets. Try Woodpecker, or Strongbow for English cider. There are some good American hard ciders, but I can't remember the names of any.

Mead is a different kettle of booze. Not too many places make beer from bee's honey. It is available, but I don't know where.

Cider might be found in many places, but not gas stations. Hornsbys is most everywhere these days, but gas stations will only have common beers and wine cooler, spirit cooler type products.

Mead however will only be found at the larger wine / beverage only Megamarts.

A small wine shop or liquor store might have Mead it, but only if the owner has a special interest in it.

Try Hornsby's Cider from any grocery or liquor store, like it better than woodpecker.
Mead can be bought at specialty beer stores and some microbreweries. Try to find a microbrewery in your area and they might be able to help. I'd say its easier to find it than it is to drink it!

Go to the Internation Meade Association page and contact someone to ask locations. They also have a forum where you can ask that question.
