Hi Timeless, yes in fact there is something we all can do to avoid Purgatory or at least shorten our stay there, sin not only offends God but it causes staining of the soul which must be cleansed before we can be in God`s presence and Purgatory is God`s merciful way of doing this for us,however if we practise self sacrifice and offer this to God as reparation for our sins this has the effect of lessening the stain of sin on our souls.
Also we can offer all and any personal dis-comfort or pain for this intention as well, again we can do works of mercy and offer these up to God.

There is a Roman Catholic belief in purgatory but it can be found nowhere in Scripture.

When Jesus died on the cross He said, "It is finished" (John 19:30). What was finished? All the work that needed to be done to save us. Purgatory is a denial of this fact. Purgatory says, it is not quite finished. You need to do some extra penance before you can get into heaven. Purgatory is an insult to the finished work of Jesus on the cross.

Because Jesus finished all the work necessary to save us, Paul could write about being absent from the body and present with the Lord (2 Cor 5:8). This wouldn't necessarily be true if there were such a thing as purgatory.

Repent of your sins and believe that Jesus has done all that is necessary to save you and the day will come when you will be ushered into heaven without any detour to purgatory. Purgatory doesn't exist.

I wouldn't get to bothered about Purgatory. It's a man made concept used to manipulate others that confuse religion with spirituality. We are made in Gods image, in fact all things are. All things are energy. All the stars in the sky the bees in the trees the earth below us, us, every thing. So god is energy. Not good, bad or indifferent. Know punishment for being bad know rewards for being good. But while your in this form there are powerful laws of nature that respond to our actions, be them positive or negative. It is the power of attraction. You put negativity in to the world and you will attract it. You put positivity in to the world and you will attract that. When you live your life knowing these laws exist, you can be a more affective entity. Know one knows what happens with our soles or the energy we possess after our deaths. After that point we have no power to will our destiny. It's back to star dust for us and the people that came before. Live in the here and now for it is all we know and have time for. Celebrate the gift of life through your actions in the world around you. You have the power to make it a better place. You are energy, you are God.

Luke 23:43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, TODAY you will be with me in paradise."
Death is inevitable. The thief on the cross knew when his would occur, but we can not predict our own. After his death, the crucified criminal went to live in paradise with Jesus. Some of us will also live eternally in God's presence. But others will experience everlasting torment, forever separated from Him.
If we receive Jesus as our Savior, our penalty for sin is paid. We are adopted into God's family, and Heaven is our eternal home. If we reject Jesus, we remain alienated from the Lord and under condemnation for our sin. We are destined to experience eternal judgment. God won't accept any of man's excuses because there is no acceptable defense for unbelief. (Acts 4:12)
Become part of God's family today. Acknowledge your sinfulness, and express your faith in these words:
"God, I have sinned against You. (Romans 3:23) I've followed my own way and refused to give You the right to rule in my life. (Romans 3:10-12) I recognize I am separated from You and cannot rescue myself. I do believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I accept the truth of the Scriptures? that His death on the cross paid my sin-debt in full. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) And I ask You to forgive me of my sins. (1 John 1:9) By faith, I receive You, Lord Jesus, as my personal Savior from this moment on."
If you just spoke those words to God, then, like the thief on the cross, you have received salvation? a gift of God's grace. The heavenly Father welcomes every person who comes to Him through His Son, regardless of background, age, or current situation. Through Jesus, the right to enter paradise is yours!

The teaching of purgatory is an invention of the Catholic church.

It does not have basis in scripture; in fact it refutes scripture.

Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Creation is multi-dimensional. Some souls that don't pass
on to a higher level, because of fear or unbelief. But aren't really
destructive personally, so they aren't drawn to the destructive
forces in spirit. End up in various states of spiritual unawareness. If you accept there is a higher reality, and
overcome guilt by treating people right. You have nothing to worry about.

There is NO such thing as purgatory. The story of Lazarus and the rich man in the New testament was a Parable. It was a teaching, that is what a parable is, was to show that IF the rich mans brothers did not believe him when he was alive, they would not believe him after death.

There is no Purgatory. You show me where abouts in the bible that says that and I will believe it. Jesus never mentioned it. Jesus spoke a lot on Hell and Heaven. There is no middle ground
