I have Bi-polar and am aware that sometimes manic episodes can cause you to behave differently to if you were stable however alot of Celebs seem to be announcing they have it as an excuse for their drug addiction and alcoholism. I think this is giving Bi polar a bad name (not that it has a good one) it diminishes the illness and gives the true sufferers a bad name. What do you think?

I have bipolar to and get annoyed for the same reason. Its like it trivialises what I have to go through everyday and all the crap I have to take to stay relatively sane. I also don't want to be associated with people that make excuses like that. Its like "OK, I've been a *****...did I say I'm bipolar?". To me they would use a broken leg as an excuse if they could.
I also don't like it when they say they have bipolar to make themselves appear "creative". Its really irritating and pretentious. Its bad enough having to pick up the pieces with other people after a manic binge, but when these idiots are all doing it my life becomes harder.

The main difference between a celeb that is bi-polar and a normal person that is bi-polar is that celebs can afford their medication for it without having to do without other essential items, like food, housing, clothes, etc. I used to work with someone that was bi-polar and I felt sorry for her because she worked 2 jobs and had no health insurance. She was a single mom of 2 kids and could not afford her meds. She got fired from job after job because of her behavior. I also think it is wrong for them to blame the way they behave on being bi-polar when they can afford their meds. Even if they were on their medsm if they are drinking it is going to cause more problems. They think because they are famous they can do whatever they want.

It is not an excuse, it is an explanation, and a path to treatment.
It's like being diagnosed with the flu ... doesn't make you feel better, or give you the right to go around hacking up on everyone, or moaning on the subway ... it just means you know what meds to take now.
Someone once told me that I had "bipolar tendendencies" and I had no idea what that meant. I never received treatment for any condition, however, and managed to muddle through a pretty awful adolescence and young adulthood before achieving something like stability in my middle years.
Yes, some folks use it as an excuse for acting out.
"Ooooh, sorry I killed and robbed that stranger, but you see, I'm 'bipolar'."
But that stuff doesn't fly.
Understanding a mental cndition that causes one to be a bastard doesn't change the fact that one is acting like a bastard. It is up to the individual to take control. A diagnosis of bipolar disease can be the first step.
It is not a license.

It's caused by brain chemicals. When people behave badly because of drugs, they will try to blame it on a lot of different things. People don't usually like to admit even to themselves that they're addicted to drugs.

As long as you take your medicine when you're supposed to you shouldn't have any real problems anyway, so you shouldn't even need to tell people you're bipolar. The best way to live with it might be to just keep quiet about it and go about your normal business normally, as your medicine should enable you to do.

In the past I hated to tell people that I was Bi-Polar because my behavior was so erratic. So, I really began to try and manage my disorder and live a normal life. Now when I mention it people don't seem to believe me because I no longer fit the stereo type.

Well, on the bright side if celebs climb on the bi-polar bandwagon then maybe more research dollars might be available for better treatments.

You act as if celebs at the prompt are not human. it is human beings like you who supply them a foul rap. in case you probably did not idolize them you would do no longer understand what they're doing. you're not any more suitable than them you fiend.
