Would you choose the .223/5.56mm, the .308/7.62 or one of the newer 6.5 Grendel/6.8 configurations in an M16 platform? Imagine the SAW with 6.5 Grendel instead of 5.56...

I've had experience with 5.56 and 7.62, I would definitely go with the 7.62. It's international and available just about anywhere and has a lot of stopping power. (26 years in the US Army)

I guess basically what you are asking is, would you want an AR-15 or an AK, I would not consider the newer stuff because of availability/cost of the ammunition may not be as easy to obtain. I would have to take the 7.62, but I would not care for it in a M16 platform that is prone to jam and tear up. I would rather have it in the traditional way those smart asians designed it. You can run over it with a tank, bury it in mud, and still pick it up and use it. Not so with the M16. But given my choice it would be none of the above. If I had to grab one weapon for self defense in a hostile enviroment it would be the Israeli made Desert Star pistol in 357 mag. auto. , for less weight, and more stopping power.

Vietnam ended a long time ago and new variants of the M16 have come out.

If you take care of it, and perform weapons maintenance, it won't jam. Also, if you put an ACOG on it and zero it the RIGHT way, you can reach out past six hundred meters with 5.56mm.

if you voluntarily hump a SAW or heavy weapons system, even the light infantry version of it, chances are you never humped one...
If you're down with humping the additional weight of an M21 (modified M14), and the ammo for it, go for it.

I want the .45 ACP 1911 model by my side best combat handgun ever! 7.62 is good for rifle i suppose but whats with the flashy weapons it is the skill in using the weapon that makes all the difference! u can have all those new flashy rounds and like but 40 years ago with a simple m-16 .223 men were knockin em dead in Nam with speed accuracy and skill, cant beat that

Give me an AK47 with 7.62 any day of the week. Solid, reliable and a helluva punch. They are also pretty impervious to the elements such as wet, sand etc.

my personal choice is 7.62...I have vast experience with both that and the 5.56....wont tote that one except as a last resort....any environment is hostile so your question doesnt make sense though.....the M-14/M1A or the H&K would make the most sense in any potential "go-bad" situation......BTW,the AK isnt 7.62x51 its 7.62x39......and its Desert Eagle, not Desert Star...no handgun can beat a rifle for stopping power...the 357 is a fine handgun but will never beat a rifle.....never

7.62, if you know its going to be hostile I want something that is will kill. the 5.56 just stinks. The 6.8 may be ok but not really tried and true yet.
