There is probably some truth to that. And after him there were many different accounts of his life and teachings and only the most appealing versions survived as the four gospels.

Actually the 'success' of the religion is more appropriately attributed to: Paul and some of his contemporaries, who turned it from an offshoot of Judaism into something completely different; a few of the early Church fathers, like John Chrysostom, who sowed the seeds of virulent anti-semitism in their efforts to completely dislodge their followers from Judaism, and the Roman Emperors who made Christianity their state religion and spread it throughout their vast realm. They didn't do it out of anything resembling piety. Promises of eternal rewards for current sufferings was fantastic for keeping the conquered masses docile.

Yes you are correct,in those times there were several who claimed to be the Messiah or were acclaimed by others, but none of them lasted or met the criteria for Messiah,Jesus spoke with such authority that people flocked to hear Him preach and the temple authorities were afraid of Him,but Jesus was not the type of Messiah that they wanted, they were looking for a militant one who would free them from Roman rule and give them power over all of Palestine,Jesus was not like this and preached only love and His Father`s kingdom, for this He was rejected by the Sanhedrin and the Pharisee`s.

I'm sure he's not the first one. Every religion had to have a "spokes person" to make people follow. Could very well be. It's not the first time the subject has come up.

Well, he obviously didn't convince you, so I guess not!

Logically, even if there WERE others who claimed similar things, it does not rule out that Jesus was not who he personally claimed to be.

I would be more concerned of the "salesmen" that work for Discovery Channel trying to sell ratings...
