I would like to know some of the most effective martial arts for people of smaller body sizes. I've decided i need to learn because i've been robbed 2 times in the past and both times was lucky cops showed up just in time that i could survive..i think it's cus they see i'm smaller and lighter in build so it's easy to rob on...i thought it is neccessary and crucial now to take up a form of martial arts.

What i'm looking for is, a discipline that is good for small people that can handle attacks from big more powerful people even if you don't have as much physical strength to begin with....or there is no such a school out there?

what is good out there? and please tell me what are it's special features, and if you've had experience with please tell me abit about it thankyou very much.

LOL! If you think Tae Kwon Do is inefficient, is only good for performances, and won't work in a real fight then you're terribly mistaken. Some styles of TKD are like that, but if you take one of the original kwans that has not been watered down for competition then it is very tough and a lot better than Muay Thai (I know, I've taken it). I don't take any ineffective martial arts. Just look at my sources and there are some good, effective styles. Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and even some forms of Tai Chi can be very effective. It all depends on the fighter, not the style.

There is no answer for which martial art is best, even when given factors such as size. The main difference between styles is personal taste, some may strike you as easier then others, or more appealing. It's like asking what's the best painting in the world? Some may say the Mona Lisa, other Starry Night by Van Gogh, others some painting we've never heard of. It's all opinion.

There are a number of arts specifically designed for modern street defense, but you may want a more traditional art. Modern arts for the street include Jeet Kun Do, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, and Krav Maga. Traditional arts include Kung Fu, Karate, Ju Jitsu, and Taekwondo. There are also hybrids that include some of the old and some of the new like Karate Kempo, Ju Jitsu (this is actually a traditional art but most of it still applies as much today as when it was designed), Aikido, and Muy Thai.

Simply find a school that's convenient for you but that pushes you to excel and train hard. Watch classes, ask for a free private lesson and ask some of the students how they feel about it. Don't take any one opinion too seriously, but get a feel for the school. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Shop around, a dojo is something you should stick with a long time, treat it like any other long term business deal. Shop with care.

Judo is probably one of th best arts there is for self defence. It teaches the same holds as JuJitsu (JuJutsu, is the proper pronouncment in Japan) Judo also teaches throwing techniques and was designed to use your attackers weight and momnetum against them. It teaches you balance and how to use simple grips and hand movements (Kasushi) along with throwing to easily take larger attacker off ballance and get them to the ground. JuJitsu is lacking in take downs.
Any art will give you some skills and get you into good shape and stronger. As long as you take a real form at a real dojo you will learn what you need to defend your self.
But Judo beig a full body full contact art will teach you to use your whole body to defend your self and increase your strength and stamina twice as fast as any other art.

As for the people who say train in Kung Fu... Kung Fu or Gung Foo as is proper is a term that means Martial Art it is not a specific art it self. Saying Kung Fu is like say Martial art. Jeet Kun do is the art that Bruce lee created and all of the rights to teach it are owned by the Lee estate so anyone that claims to teach it is just using the name to get people in the door.

Judo gives a natural advantage for small people, because your lower center of gravity makes it easier for you to break the balance of the opponent. It is very wide spread.

Wing Tsun Kung Fu is a martial art specifically designed for small people. It is harder to find.

Those are the two ones usually advisable for small people, however, Goju Ryu Karate is wide spread and would be useful for you too.

All the traditional Oriental styles are good for small people. How many 6'6" 250# Chinese, Japanese or Korean people do you know? All these styles depend on technique rather than brute force.

I would definitely suggest Krav Maga. Krav Maga is the fighting technique of the Israeli Military, and is designed not as a sporting discipline, but to teach self-defence. I am female, 5'4", and weigh under 110lbs, but I've effectively defended myself against much bigger attackers both in a real life situation when someone tried to mug me, and in training, using Krav Maga. It is effective no matter what your size and is designed to help the littler people like us look after ourselves!
Good luck!

Thank you for asking that question. I appreciate that. I would say brazilian jiu jitsu. Helio gracie, a matriarch of the art, and developer of the effective art was small in stature and quite deadly. He is famous in the rough streets of Brazil for being a deadly streetfighter and daunting nemesis challenging anyone who stood in his path. He has spawned of worldwide movent in the art devoloped on the mean streets of Brazil.

Judo with alot of practice and study can be useful. It will take some time commitment.

The founder of Judo was a tiny man. I bet he wasn't more than 120 lbs soaking weight.

little people should make up for there size with a big gun/knife.

target practice is a very good discipline for people of any size.

As a proud member of the NRA, I feel that a gun can make the difference between living and dying, (if someone is going to die, I choose not me)

however, I am also a firm believer in that a gun will do more harm than good in the hands of a person that dose not respect and know how to use the power that a gun grants the person holding it, if this is the path you choose you should talk to a gun dealer and find a good NRA sponsored gun safety coarse in your aria(hand gun safety coarse meets the requirements for a concealed weapons permit!!)

if there is not a knowledgeable dealer in your aria I might be able to look up some courses for you through the NRA web sight.
