Parents are responsible for their children until they are 18, so they can't leave home until then. Children should not be living at home, for the most part, when they are done with school. I started babysitting when I was 13 but did not have a job until I was over 17, the driving age in the state I grew up in was 17. I lived in a very small town and did not have any opportunities for a teenager to work. A better question would be why do parents feel like they have to give their children everything.

I don't know about 20 hours a week. With the work load they have at school, 7 hours at school and sometimes 3-5 hours of hw after school a day, 20 hours is asking a bit much. But, children do need to learn how to take care of themselves and earn their privileges through responsibilities. I was working since I was 11 years old. You barley see 16 year olds holding down a weekend job nonetheless helping around the house nowadays. I do think they should be working though.

Since when are children obligated to leave home at 16 years old? Parents are legally responsible for their children until they are 18.
Teenagers should hold a part-time job - if they don't, then that is usually the sign of a poor work ethic instilled in them by their lazy parents. Let's put the blame where it belongs when they are that age.
Later in life, if the grown children are still trying to blame their parents for all their problems, then they need to move on. But when they are 16, there's no one else to blame besides the parents.

I believe that a child who is old enough to work should work. Even if it is parttime. That way when they want something, they have their own money to buy it. Although 18 is the legal age they are responsible for themselves, I still feel that children should know what it is to work and better appreciate their parents for working their butts off to support them.

16? You want to kick your kid out before their even done with high school. No wonder their are so many kids with issues because there are parents like you. Beleive me one day you will regret it because one day you will be the one leeching off your kids when your old and they probably wont have any sympathy for you.

true, i beilve that parents that do not instill good work ethics into their children by both dispaying it themselves and ensuring that they begin the work force no later than 17 or18 are enabling their laziness. these are the very same people that wonder why they are still supporting their children that live at home when they are 25-30 years old. they are not doing their children a favor, they are hindering their maturity.
