Hi Jaygirl!! Coughing is a defense reaction of the body. Coughing can be due to an extremely minor problem - no more than drinking water too fast - or it can be the first sign of serious problems of the lungs or heart.

If the dog trying to suck air than drinking water too fast. Try blowing in her nose when it happens and she will stop. By blowing air in his nose, you pushing the "clot" of air she is experiencing back out.

But if Is the cough harsh and dry or is it moist and productive- go to vet!!

Well, an Upper Respatory Infection could be the problem. It is highly contagous in animals. So if you have other animals in your house hold I would take your dog to the vet to get it checked out. The signs of an URI is: Coughing, Sneezing, lethargy, fever, and running of the eyes and nose. This could also be just a cold. I would take him into the vet as soon as possible. But it could be nothing. If he is only coughing when he is drinking I wouldn't worry about it. But still take him to the vet and in the mean time keep a close eye on him. If you notice a decrease in his appetite then that is a bad sign of a infection. If he cant smell his food then he will be picky on what he eats or stop eating all together. So take him to the vet a.s.a.p. Just to make sure.
Good luck and I hope this gets resolved

Ask your vet, but sounds like poss. trachea damage. Maybe the people who had her before popped her neck with a choke chain. Does your dog pull on leash? You may want to use a harness, an Easy Walk, or a Gentle Leader to avoid further damage. Be sure to reward your dog a lot for not pulling. Poor thing.
