Magazines use 225 to 300 dpi. Newspapers only require 150 to 200 dpi. Either way, an 8 megapixel camera is plenty.

What camera to get depends on your budget. At any rate, for photojournalism you'll want a digital SLR camera. Point & shoots are out of the question due to their sluggish performance.

For under $800 total, get a Canon Rebel XTi or a Nikon D50, either one with the 18-55mm kit lens, and no other options - no extra lenses, no external flash, etc. (these cameras have a smal pop-up flash). The only extra you should get is a 1GB memory card.

For around $1500, you could get a Nikon D80 with an 18-70mm zoom and an SB800 flash. This camera has a plastic body and it's capable of 3 frames per second. The lens is also consumer grade - the image quality is very decent, but it won't knock your socks off in terms of low light performance, AF-speed, or build quality.

For $2500 to $3000 you could get a semi-pro Canon 30D + Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 zoom + flash, or a Nikon D200 + Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 + flash. These cameras have a metal body and they're both capable of 5 frames per second. The autofocus systems are more sophisticated as well. The lenses are better in terms of AF-speed, image quality, and low-light performance. The Nikon lens also has a pro build quality - the Canon lens doesn't. If you need more zoom reach, add a $1600 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom (both brands make one).

For pro gear, consider the Canon 1Ds Mk ll + 24-70mm f/2.8 + flash, or the Nikon D2Xs + 17-55mm f/2.8 + flash. These systems are +$5000. This Canon only does 3 FPS. If you need it for sports, get the 1D Mk ll N instead - this model does 8 FPS. With the Nikon D2Xs you can do 3 FPS high-rez, or flick a switch and do 8 FPS low-rez. Again, if you need more zoom reach, add a 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom. At this level, you'll be walking around with over $500 worth of memory cards, filters, and batteries.
