You measure a tv diagonally across the screen (from bottom corner to top corner), not straight across or up and down. You are probably not measuring it right. If you measure it like that and it is still 27" then they gave you the wrong tv and you should take it back.

Everybody is right about measuring the screen diagonally...
But the specified screen size is NOT the VISIBLE screen size. It is the actual cafe size of the picture tube a part of which also gets covered behind the frame and remains hidden to front.
So the clear vesible size is usually lesser by about an inch or so each side..

TV's are measured on an angle (like an X) using the screen only.

This is so fundamental, I can't believe that you don't know how to take a measurement.
You measure the TV screen diagonally.
Do you even know what "diagonal" mean?

in addition to measuring diagonally, some part of the screen would be going inside the tv casing.. you could be missing some 0.5 inches or so which should be adding up to your measure because of this..

because they measure the screen diagonally, its not measured from the total width but the angles from top left to bottom right or top right of screen to bottem left of screen.......
