Alot of the time its because the abused person is bullied and harrassed so much that they give in and let them back in.... Low self esteem from continuously being told they are" worthless, cant make it on their own, stupid, ugly, no-one will want them" etc.... Plus alot of times, the police do NOT help where there are Domestic Violence & Restraining orders in place. So - where do you go, and who can you depend on??? Think from their point of view, they think no one will want them, no one will help them, and generally people who are in abusive relationships are/have been isolated from friends and family - who are you going to turn to?
If you have a friend who has just gone back to an abusive partner, please dont judge her/him harshly, but be supportive and be there for them. It may not be as clear cut as it seems.

It's just the cycle. Some people think the abuser will change. The abuser usually does the whole mind trick thing of telling their partner that no one loves them and they're worthless without them. After so long, you'll start to believe that and just stay with them thinking you're no good.

guilt, no where else to turn, shame, etc. People in abused relationships are often threatened by the abuser that if they go to the police, they'll be hurt even worse, and they tend to believe them. Also, especially with sexual abuses, people tend to feel intense guilt and shame, they feel as if they're at fault when in reality it's not their fault at all except that they're staying with the jerk. In the U.S. rape and sexual assault in college campuses has the percentage of reported sexual assaults at 5%. That's more than the general public, which is at about 2-3%.

It's a pattern often learned because of abusive parents. The individual often thinks that they deserve the treatment or that they really love the person and that they will change.

Because they realize that they're worth nothing and deserve that kind of treatment.
