You shouldn't let them join a gym @ 12 - lifting weights causes muscles to develop faster than the bones are growing. This is incredibly bad for joints & can even disrupt hormone levels, children shouldn't even go nerar weights until their body is completely developed & matured, around the ages of 17-18.
It could also stunt growth too.

Generally in principle no. 16 or 18 is the accepted age break. Remember that gyms and fitness centres are based on adults making a serious commitment to a healthy lifestyle and there would be a conflict with children in the same environment. My gym would not support children nor would I want it to. They have plenty of opportunities in other specially designed venues where proper supervision and equipment is designed for them. For example, running machines, cross trainers and the like are made for the adult frame, the control units are at adult heights and the resistance equipment fit adult arm and leg lengths.

I think they can, with an adult.. or sometimes just by themselves if a parent co-signs. it depends on the gym really, and being at such a young age, he might only be allowed to use certain floors/areas of the gym... no weight-training for example. But I'm sure he'd be allowed near the pool, basketball courts, treadmills, etc. Some gyms even have special group activities for minors.

I think you'd better focus on your overall fitness & health. You can just go for running, swimming, basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc. It's fun, especially when you have friends to do the exercises with you. I just wonder, what is your body weight/ height? Are you medically overweight? You are still growing up, so you may be slightly "overweight". If you are really overweight due to health problems such as hormonal problem, you should see doctor. Even for full-grown adults such as those in 20s or 30s I would advise the same thing. Weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), etc are just numbers to help you to measure proportion of your body. The end goal is your health and fitness. For your info, you should not compare your body to models or celebs. Men and women have different types and body, and it's usually hard to say what type of body is the best. It's OK to be a bit fat or thin. Don't starve yourself like what some celebs did. Thin does not equal to beautiful, fat does not equal to ugly. Guys do not have to be muscular and girls do not have to be thin & flat. Be happy, healthy & friendly ;)

most leisure centres have a 'mini gym' with a youth club attached so not only are they making friends, the emphasis is taken away from building muscles. ask at your local one and they are sure to help.
