Chalazia and hordeola are sudden onset of localized swellings of the eyelid; a chalazion is caused by noninfectious meibomian gland occlusion, whereas a hordeolum is caused by infection. Both conditions initially cause lid hyperemia and edema, swelling, and pain; with time, a chalazion becomes a small nontender nodule in the eyelid center, whereas a hordeolum remains painful and localizes to a lid margin. Diagnosis is clinical. Treatment is with hot compresses. Both conditions improve spontaneously, but incision or, for chalazia, intralesional corticosteroids may be used to hasten resolution.
Despite the recommendation from a highly reputed medical source (see second link below), I usually use a cold water splash or rest a chilled wet washcloth on my eyes to reduce swelling of the eye area. If your diet has too much sodium, it could be contributing to your retaining water in your lower lid area. Reduce the salt intake and notice to see if the condition improves.

Use cucumber slice or tea bags when you're going to sleep..not expensive yet produce great results. For quick one..use light eyeshadows to hide the puffiness and make your eyes much more awake.

Hey Kat- Put some cool water on a washcloth and just lay it over your eyes! You need to buy a gel mask! They are great and you can make them cold by freezing them or warm by microwaving them. Good Luck
