Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs.
Just how toxic depends on:
How much was ingested
How dark the chocolate was
How much your dog weighs
The status of your dog's health to start with
The darker and purer the chocolate, the more dangerous. Eating a bar of Nestles dark chocolate would necessitate a visit to the emergency vet.
Eating a brownie might give him the runs, but will probably be okay.

Renodogsmom was correct, it all depends on how much, how big your dog is and what type of chocolate. I cringe everytime I read someone saying that there dogs eat it all the time and never die from it, I have seen way too many pointless deaths because of this reasoning. By letting your dog think its okay to eat a little chocolate, your basically training him to think its okay to eat chocolate, so the next time he comes across a halloween bag full of treats, whats to stop him from eating the whole thing?

Supposedly it is harmful for dogs - but before I heard about that fact, I had a dog that ate chocolate all the time. She lived to be 20+ years old. She was a mutt though - so had that strong healthy system :-).
I would not feed my pit bull chocolate though. Pure bred dogs are sometimes weak, and I do not want to take any chances.
