It is already becoming like it. But learning from history, empires rise and fall. The biggest empire that existed is the Roman Empire that lasted 500 years. Hitler tried to build a German empire (The Third Reich) that supposed to exist for a thousand years but lasted only 12 years, from Hitler's rise to power until Germany's defeat in World War II. The United States, as a global superpower is now 60 years (right after World War II up to the present). It needs to stay in power for 400 more years before achieving the feat of the Roman Empire. Can the U.S. hold on that long?. That's still a big question mark.

While the US exerts excessive economic and military influence over the world, it may be in the final throes of an imperial phase. This is because: a) it has tried (and largely failed) in its direct military actions since the second world war; b) by doing this it has attracted a lot of critics and a lot more enemies; c) by the time you actually declare an empire, the chances are it is already in decline.
The US is an aggressive military power, yet economically protectionist. It calls for assistance and support for its actions around the world but is happy to disregard the same (UN, Kyoto).
This is quite simply having your cake and eating it and it is not sustainable. Within a generation as the economies of China and India develop, they may well displace the US as the world's primary superpowers.
After all, the US has only population of 300m or so, and is reliant on immigration to maintain that level.

so you think the USA should mind their own business and let those other countries fight their own battles . well lets say they never went into kuwait how much do you think petrol would be now and what would the kuwait population be like , they,d probably be all murdered or would have fled to britain and kuwait would be called iraq . if the USA were not as powerful as they are we (every other country) would be speaking arabic or korean or chinese and living under a dictator . ok you might call the usa dictators but i know i would rather live knowing that the USA are there and will be there should anyone try and control the rest of us . lets go back to world war 2 how was the british army doing before USA was brought into the war , unspekin ze deutsch,

When the Soviet Union dissolved, the United States of America achieved de facto world hegemony. "Empire" implies concentration of power in a title - this thought is repugnant to the republican ideals of the U.S. Constitution. To understand why the U.S. acts as it does, I suggest you study this document and foreign policy for a minimum of four years.

If they were an empire they would be the worst one the world has ever had. Besides, China will overtake them in 20 years as the worlds most successful country on Earth.

There's still too much resistance. Once they're close to completing the military industrial complex, they'll be more likely to make that declaration...unless by some miracle people wake up!
