What I learned is that you have to be a certain percentage Native American, preferably from the same tribe as the child and it does have to be approved by the tribe. It is not easy to do.

There are so many Native American children waiting in Foster care because they can not be adopted by non-native families. Call your local department of human services (or you can google your county's name and "foster care") tell them you are a Native American family looking to adopt. They will do a happy dance, speak in tongues, and direct you to the next informational meeting near you. Going about adoption this way is free and in your case it will likely be quick as well. Other people trying to adopt from the foster system have a lot of competition if they want a young, healthy child. Those people are not even considered for the children you would be trying to adopt because of ICWA, so you will have no problem.
