1) Nicotine is one of the MOST addicting drugs we know of. Much moreso than heroin or crack-cocaine.
2) People start smoking young, when they don't feel the health risks apply to them. Then they get addicted.
3) Smoking is socially acceptable (or it used to be). Your parents may have smoked. It was in movies.
4) Marketing. The tobacco groups have done a great job recruiting new smokers. The tobacco groups did a great job obfuscating the clearly harmful effects of smoking. Nicotine content in cigarettes has gone up 10% the past few years.
5) Education. Cardiovascular death is still the #1 killer in this country, by way of stroke, MI, CHF, etc. Smoking directly causes these diseases, and kills many more people this way than by cancer. But nobody knows that

Smoking is supposedly the hardest drug to kick, next to cocaine... now I suppose they would say crystal meth? In any case, part of the difficulty seems to lie in a phenomenon called "psychological reversal". This is what happens when you really want to stop something and don't seem to be able to, or really want to do something and don't seem to be able to. Fortunately, the slickest, easiest-to-learn and apply energy therapy, called Emotional Freedom Technique, has been extremely successful in overcoming Psychological Reversal. Many ex-smokers will tell you that EFT was what worked when many other methods didn't.

Addiction, but its more then that. Its a very social thing- smokers tend to hang out with other smokers, so its hard to get away from. Going outside and smoking a cigarette gives you a quiet moment to relax and think during the day. Its enjoyable- its almost a sensual feeling. Besides- people still eat fast food, and they know thats bad for them- can you answer that one?

I have never had a clue about this either.
Why in this day do people smoke, get drunk, do drugs or eat meat??? This is the next millenium and people just keep doing stupid things. I know people can get addicted by WHY WOULD YOU PUT A FLAMING CANCER STICK TO YOUR LIPS IN THE FIRST PLACE???
They must have an idiot error embedded in their programming.
I have been told by some people that smoke that it is really an acceptible form of suicide - self harm, that they really want to hurt themselves.

They are mentally and phsyically addicted to it even though it is cigarettes. Their body craves it and they can not go on without it when they become addicted. Cigaretes are VERY addicting thats why so many people smoke and unfortunatley even most of them know it is bad for them. Most of the smokers get cancer and numerous other types of diseases. Just like any other type of harmful drug cigarettes are a part of that dangerous killing machine that costs so many people their lives.

Because I'm addicted to it. I have tried to quit a few times and the come backs are worse. I love my morning cigarrets after coffee. My after dinner expresso coffee cigarret is one of my favorites. My drink cigarrets at a party are endless too. Excellent combo ah? caffeine, nicottine and alcohol. I'm commiting long term suicide and lovin it. Life is short. And yes, I know about ephisema and long cancer, my grandpa died of this. But time will tell me when to stop.

We paid taxes to gummit to get us addicted. FDA never said it was bad until I after I had smoked for 20 years, and the cig corps still sell them. But pot is illegal. Now I am addicted to cigs and valiums but they are legal. Go figure.

nicotine addiction . . . its not a mental choice (100% anyways) . . . you cant just say - no more - no more cig's - your body and brain will make descisions for you - without your mental higher reasoning
