Some nouns that start in "a" in Spanish, even though they are feminine, take "el" as an article in the singular. For example, "hambre" and "agua" are examples of this. What about "área"? The input of native speakers would be most helpful.

By the way, the reason some nouns do this, apparently, is because they start with "a", and it appears that Spanish doesn't want to have two of the same vowel sound together. But not all words beginning in "a" do this.

Feminine nouns are only preceded with "el" when the first syllable is stressed. If "el agua" was pronounced with the last syllable stressed (it would have to be spelled "aguá"), then it would be "la aguá". Any feminine noun beginning with a stressed "a" is preceded by "el" instead of "la", but the plural is still "las" and "unas". This is pretty much universal.
The best thing about Spanish is that they actually follow their rules.

If u were refering to a person, you would refer to a female, Ex: la maestra, la chica, la senora, ect. El is masculine and would be said only if u are refering to a male or a general term like "student" that desnt have a masculine or feminine form in spanish ex: El chico, el maestro, el estudiante. When speaking in spanish u would usually say "la" if it is something that ends w/"a" Ex: La camisA, la chaketA. "Los" for things that end in "es" Ex: Los calsitinES, los calsonES. "El" for things that end in "on" or "o" Ex el ZapatO, el pantalON.
