Some nouns that start in "a" in Spanish, even though they are feminine, take "el" as an article in the singular. For example, "hambre" and "agua" are examples of this. What about "área"? The input of native speakers would be most helpful.

By the way, the reason some nouns do this, apparently, is because they start with "a", and it appears that Spanish doesn't want to have two of the same vowel sound together. But not all words beginning in "a" do this.
