for my homework, the sentence i have to copy this from this book and it looks exactly like this:
"I called you California, your real, honest, and true name, given to you by Uncle Kanda to commemorate your birth in this glorious state," I said.

the teacher said to put quotation marks around the sentence since i am copying it from the book but i don't know how to do it with this sentence

I said is a part of the sentence, but not part of the quote:

"I called you California, your real, honest, and true name, given to you by Uncle Kanda to commemorate your birth in this glorious state", I said.

This is how I would do it:

"'I called you California, your real, honest, and true name, given to you by Uncle Kanda to commemorate your birth in this glorious state,' I said."

Yes, 'I said' is part of the quote, in this case! It calls for double Quotation marks: begin with ""I called.........state", I said".
