duh, for those yelling about government assistance, ssi is for social security supplemental income, which means you must be low income with *disabilities* to qualify for it. it is what we all pay into social security for, and as I understand it, you must have so many quarters paid into the social security system to qualify as an adult.

anyway... first off, try looking into some of the option with church adoptions services. many do informational meetings about adoption and can give you requirements, etc. to become an adopteive parent.

another is to look at fostering children. some children will become eligible for adoption through fostering. and foster children parents often recieve help with learning to foster children and support.

I think its admirable that you are asking about adoption. look into the various options carefully and consider your health and future before making any decisions. best of luck to you.

You can become a foster parent and work with an agency that has kids that are adoptable, and in this way you can get a monthly amount that helps you pay the bills for the child which would probably help if you are on ssi just go through a foster care service and there are plenty of kids that need a loving home. Just call your local department of children services and they work with private foster care agencies. Good Luck

There are times when there are adoption subsidies for people who adopt children from the state - especially if someone is able to adopt a hard-to-place child.

I don't know what your disability is, so that could be a factor in the case of children who need certain types of physical therapy or extra attention of one sort or another.

If your disability is a mental disability it is unlikely, as far as I know, that you would be allowed to adopt a child.

I would recommend Foster parenting first, that way, you could possibly suppliment your income to take care of another individual, as I am sure ssi does not cover a lot of things that you will need for a child.

Get a job and get off of government assistance. I am not trying to be rude, I am just telling you the truth. No one is going to allow someone on government assistance to adopt a child. There are certain requirements that must be met in order to adopt. You must pass psychological testing, personality testing, background checks, etc. You must be able to prove ability to support yourself as well as a child without assistance. I just don't see that happening on SSI. That is roughly $500-700 a month (depending upon where you live).

I think that its great that you want to adopt, but if I were you I would talk to a attroney that handles this and they could give you an idea on what to do, or contact a local adoption agency in your area.
