I'll save you time and give you Chinese as well as Japanese

Chinese (simplified)

Love - 爱
Strength - 力量 (can be shortened to 力)
Family - 家庭 (can be shortened to 家)
Hope - 希望

Japanese
Love - 愛
Strength - 強さ
Family - 家族 (might be shortened to 族?)
Hope - 希望

Also, please note that everyone after rabbityama are f*cking with you and are complete 肛門.

Please don't listen to most of the people on here....they've written "Anus," "Hatred," "Fecal Matter" among other things.

I would definitely go somewhere else to make sure what you want to put on your body is right (also never trust a tattoo artist - I've seen characters that have been drawn upside-down).

You'd also want to find what they look like in the calligraphic style, anyway....Also, there are different ways to write the characters (kind of how we have old English). I'd consult with someone fluent in the Language (in person).

Be sure to research it against more than one source, also there can be different symbols for one word or idea because they have three alphabets so be aware of that, last of all some tattoo places have experience with that already so if you leave in a city and you call around you might luck out. I have a tattoo in Asian calligraphy on my back I am a Buddhist in the us.

Um... I hate to rain on everybody's big "Kanji" Parade, but Ravin Gavin has the right idea here people. The rest of the people have these characters that mean weird things. For example,

love = 愛 <--- this is not correct in that it is missing 2 major characters that compose the TRUE meaning of the word. Let me fill in the holes for you. The correct Japanese character for "Love" is 肛門愛 which is read, "Mazda" and translates to, "Love and Cherish".
I also have a very sophisticated background in Chinese and the chinese character for "Love" is not "愛" , but "我的肛門” . Over the years so many things get lost in translations and original meanings. I am here to simply help correct this problem. I hope this helped you. Don't be confused by what everyone else is putting down, please be patient and believe what experience can tell you. Thank you.

Google the word you want and "kanji"
that should give you some pics. Course, those are common enough most tat places have them

By Japanese symbols I assume you mean "kanji", which are actually Chinese characters.

hope = 望
love = 愛
strength = 力氣
family = 家庭

For Japanese, these are the best:

希望 - kibou - hope (choose 望 if you only want one character)
愛 - ai - love
力 - chikara - strength/power
家族 - kazoku - family (choose 家 if you only want one character)

P.S. the person below my post has listed words related to the anus and excrement. If you use those kanji, it will be extremely embarassing!
