There are different sections int he Bible that answer this question. One of the major scripture readings is 1 Corinthians 13. This is typically read at marriages, but it deals perfectly with marriage. The one that actually talks about marriage is Mark 10:7-9 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate."

A license or document is used for the legal marriage ... i.e. what the government recognizes. Unfortunately, if you just have a purely spiritual union the government will not recognize it. In some situations, your union will be recognized but for any legal documents or situations, like changing a name or passport, you will need to have the legal documents stating the marriage.

I hope this helps.

Hmm. I don't think it goes into what sort of legal document is required. A marriage ceremony held in a church is going before God and asking Him to bless the union. I imagine the paperwork is a practical thing that sprang up. I mean, if people got married today but didn't receive licenses, it would be a problem for all sorts of reasons. A wife or a husband could throw a spouse out of the house, marry someone else. Tax purposes. They had taxes back then too. Probably just made sense to start writing down marriages and keeping track of them.

We are not privileged to know the legalities of Biblical marriage.
We do know that Eve was created specifically for Adam & was presented to Adam as his life companion; which I would think constitutes the first marriage.

Yes, it is God that joins a couple together. But we also require it to be legalized in the form of a marriage license. It is not recognized, by man, as a marriage if they donot possess this document.

If you really want to get right down to the wherewithal, the act of sexual intercourse is what seperates a marriage relationship from all other relationships. Therefore by that alone, in God's eyes, marriage can take place long before our legal cermony.

Purpose of Marriage

Genesis - Chapter 1:27-30

27. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
28. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
29. Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.
30. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

Genesis - Chapter 9:7

7. As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.

Ephesians - Chapter 5:31-33 ( taken from the Holy Bible, New Living Translation ©. Copyright © 1996, by Tyndale Chariatable Trust)

31. As the Scriptures say, "A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one."
32. This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.
33. So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Marriages in Heaven

Luke - Chapter 20:34-36

34. Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.
35. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage,
36. and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.

Mark - Chapter 12:25

25. When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.

Matthew - Chapter 22:30

30. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
