I recently dyed my very dark brown/black hair to a light brown/chestnut color. It came out lighter than I thought it would. Is there anything I can do that will make my hair darker? Will the color fade in time, or will it continually get lighter? What happens when I do not use a shampoo specifically made for colored hair?
I do not want to go to the salon to fix it, so I might just redye it after a couple of weeks if I do not grow to like it.
Thanks in advance. :)

So, if I use my normal Pantene ProV Shampoo, will my hair get lighter or darker?

Both my parents and hairdressers and, from experience, I can only suggest you dying your hair again (at least a week later) to a slightly darker shade.
Once hair is dyed a lighter shade, it can never revert back to the colour it once was. Instead, it may go lighter or, depending on the colour, change completely after washing your hair over a long period of time (e.g. colours like red may turn copper over a few months etc...)
When you use a shampoo not-specifically for coloured hair, it may accelerate the fading. Shampoos/Conditioners specially patented for coloured hair try to lock in the colour so it lasts longer.

Recently dyed ghair will always come out lighter because of ammonia. It will gradually grow darker and become less vibrant. Time will darken your hair and it's not a good idea to dye your hair for another three months because if you do, you'll overdry it and make it worse. Using color safe shampoo is a good option as it helps the color to last longer; that is the only real difference. If you have to dye it again, wait some time and use plenty of leave in conditioner.

If you'd gone darker, it would fade back to light, but it dosen't work the other way around. Your hair has been bleached to the color it is now, and it will stay that way. You'll probally just have to redo it or let it grow out! You could even try putting some darker highlights or lowlights into it. Go with a arburn or reddish shade. It will make the whole thing look darker, and it will look absolutely killer, too!

Unless you used a dye that stripped the color out (like a bleach) of your hair then it will eventually fade.
If you did use a bleach then your hair will actually feel healthier if you dye it again because you will be puting the color back in your stripped hair folicle.
In fact if you would like it to fade quicker, use sunlight dishsoap to wash it out or fade it out. It really works.
Don't use a shampoo/conditioner that is made for color treated hair if you want the color to fade.
Hope this helps

You can use one of those shampoo's that deposit pigment in the darker color that you would like. You can also put in some lowlights. It isn't too difficult and you can do those after you have colored your hair. Just make sure that whatever you decide to do, you use a really good conditioner. To be honest, I don't think it matters what shampoo you use as long as you use a better conditioner.

it is only going to fade and get lighter....
beside actually dying your hair again there is not much else you can do. you could try a glaze, but that may or may not work.
if you don't use a shampoo for colored hair it generally fades faster.... but some are a marketing gimmick...

I think it will fade. When i used sun in, my hair turned yellowy orange. At first i hated it, but then it started to fade now i like it. If you really dont start to like it just re dye it.

the hair color will not fade if its not hena. if you do anything, probably will cause damage to your hair so i think you should learn to get used to it until your hair grows longer. just think positive. it's a fresher new look for you so enjoy! :)
