It helps them float becsue of the holes in the middle. The holes also help keep them crunchy.

Hmm I'd think so it could get air into the cheerio so it won't get soggy? I think I read something similiar to what you're asking on a Cheese-Its box... "Why do cheese its have holes in them?" Something about air.. haha idk :o)
