Bio remediation in the arena of environmental remediation consists of:

injection of Oxygen or hydrogen generating materials in a contaminated soil or groundwater to stimulate bacteria to eat hydrocarbons or chemicals (ORC by regenisis or HRC by Regenisis)

Mixing biological agents into surfical spills on water to remediate oil spills (exxon valdez (epa.gov)

Bugs need oxygen to live and produce carbon dioxide as a by product. Effectiveness is measured by sammpling the effected media both before and after the project is undertaken. Usually, they will take 3 weeks to 6 months to work.

The bugs are usually mixed with a vegatable oil and poured onto/into the contaminated media.

Bio remediation is very expensive, relatively new and still in research. Other forms of remediation are more effecient and each application has to be evaluated on the merits of the project itself.
