Bound's hubby here:
First, it comes down to how you define long range. In the target community, long range typically refers to 1000 yard shooting. Both the .308 and the .30-06 are very accurate at 1000 yards. The .30-06 has a slight edge over the .308 for several reasons. First, the larger case allows the selection of slower burning powders that will propel heavier bullets. Second, typically the .30-06 is 100 fps faster than the .308 and this helps keep heavier bullets super sonic at long range. Third, while the heaviest bullet in .308 that should be recommended in a semi-auto is about 185 grains. The .30-06 can handle up to 220 grain bullets accurately at 1000 yards.
This is all based on the use of match grade bullets and target grade rifles. Do not expect anything like acceptable accuracy from a typical sporter barreled rifle at 1000 yards
The typical formula for success at long range shooting is a heavy rifle with heavy bullets and heavy powder charges.
Good luck.

The .308 has proven itself to be more accurate out to longer distances (1000yards) than a factory loaded .30-06 in competitions. You have to reload the .30-06 yourself to get it's full potential. Also, the .308 is short action which is inherently more accurate than long action. Most shooters are not accurate enough though to ever tell the accuracy difference between the two rounds. The .30-06 does produce more energy and has a wider selection of bullets than the .308 making it a better choice for hunting.
Both are great rounds that are very accurate, capable of long range, and have plenty of knock-down power for most North American game. Ammo for both is readily available with the .308 being slightly cheaper. Surplus military ammo can be found for both as well. I guess it all just depends on whether or not you want a short or long action rifle.
Here is an interesting article about the accuracy of both rounds.

30.06 has more energy at longer distances, however the trajectory or accuracy is very similar. So based on the limited information in the question I would have to say the 30.06 is better because it would deliver more energy or knock-down power.

They are both good but all things equal, action, load, barrel length, scope, etc. the .30-06 Springfield is the better long range rifle.

308 has won more competition matches in its shorter history.
The 308 is also the most commonly used by Sniper teams in the US for it‘s inherent accuracy over the 30-06.
