so i've had my little pembroke welsh corgi for a little under 2 months ....he is almost 5 months old.....up until this point he has not barked much at all. He's always slept in his kennel and has never whined or barked or made a peep in there until just recently. The last couple of nights he has randomly started barking in his kennel due to little noises like people tlaking/walking in the apt. above us. How can we make this stop, becuase our neighbors are going to get mad fast! He has never doen this before and doesn't bark hardly ever otherwise. What can we do???

We just got a whippet puppy (17 weeks old). She just started barking last night. What we did was made sure she had something to listen too to drown out the noises she hears. We have a little radio next to her crate. It has worked wonders! When we leave for a little while she has the tv on Animal Planet! You would be surprised what can keep a dog happy!

Good luck and congrats on your puppy!

Firstly I would find a trainer in your area, preferably one who teaches positive reenforcement. What reaction does he get when he barks, do people call out to him? If so, stop! Ignore him. By barking and people reacting to it, no matter if its a smack (hopefully not!) or anything, its a sign that he has one and he is getting the attention he is asking for.

You can either:

a) try to ignore the barking - he will eventually see that he is no longer getting the reaction he is after and will get bored and do something else. It is a good idea to get Kong toys and set up a rope on a spring for him to keep him occupied.

b) shake a can with rocks in it whenever he barks - this is a way for him to be taught not to bark without you or your family being associated with the noise (be sure to be out of sight but be in an area where he can hear the can be shaken). When he starts barking, shake the can - he should be startled by the loud noise and stop. Keep this up.

Lastly, I would talk to your neighbours. Let them know that you are going through a training period with your pup and ask for their patience. You could also ask if they can let you know if your pup is barking etc when you are not at home, so you can rectify that also. You'll find that neighbours would be much more forgiving if you explain the situation.

Good luck!

He's a baby babies cry or yell or whatever at night. That's 1 no. 2 make his crate his bedroom don't punish him by putting him in there. Make it a nice place to be. Blanket and toys and leave the door open so he can go in and out. At night tell him it's night night time and guide him to the crate. But you have to wear his butt out before hand. Take him out first thing in the morning and the very last thing at night. Then about every 2 hours inbetween. When it's time for a nap take him to the crate put his toy in there that he was just playing with wait until he is asleep and close the door don't lock it. and let him sleep in there. At night would be the only time you lock the door if he doesn't stay in there. I would put paper down in front of the door and leave the door open until he is house broken. Play with him alot in the evening so he is really tired when it's time for you to go to sleep and then take him out always keep him out until he at least pees praise him then tell him it's time to go to bed. Lock the doors turn off the lights and you go to bed also. You have to teach him this is quiet time time to sleep all night. In the evening right before bed when you come back in the house don't get him excited it's time to go to bed. Try keeping him up as much as you can during the day also.

If this little guy is going to be part of your family, take him
out of his kennel, make a space for him in a dog bed somewhere
in your bedroom ....he just wants to be near you. The barking
will stop immediately. He's only a baby and needs a little
nurturing. He may be scared in his kennel and unable to
deal with strange noises yet.

sounds like he's had enough of being locked in a kennel. If he must stay inside at night try moving it into another room. Maybe closer to your bed or something . You could try to sooth him or reassure him when he starts barking ...if that doesn't work get an anti-bark collar and start training him.

he must learn there are consequences for barking an you must be consistent at punishment so he learns quickly that barking equals being squirted with water and a firm NO !
soon he will learn that one word NO means getting squirted, then eventually you will only have to say NO and he will stop barking.
Some day he will stop barking needlessly and only need reminding with the NO once in a while .... takes awhile but it will be worth it for your dog and the whole neighborhood will thank you !
barking dogs are the worst nuisance

there is a really great toy called Kong, it is rubber, virtuall undestroyable(our rott has one), when you put the dog int the crate, fill the middle of the kong with peanut butter, or cheese whiz(totally safe), then give it to the dog. works wonders with anxiety issues.
