I guess it would sound better if we were God's soaring eagles or roaring lions. Do you know what, I read from somewhere that sheeps like to be in crowd, they enjoy being near still water, they pollute their surroundings, follow each other..I think we are many ways like sheeps...and we need to have a good shepherd to keep us from harms way.

Pretty much for the same reasons that all people with a god complex use such ridiculous analogies. Let's all accept the fact that there are a lot of good books out there, and that the Bible is just another one. It's the best selling book of all time, but the Guinness Book of World Records isn't too far behind.

Because it was the best example of someone who was in charge of many creatures but watched over, tended to, cared for and lead. Back then there werent a lot of school teachers or something of that nature that He could use an example of.

Because sheep follow their shepard and that is what Christians are. They are his sheep, his followers. It is a metaphor.

edit: I fear some have missinterpeted what I meant. I was not referring to Jesus' love for man but for that of a sheep. Geez .

because the jews at the time knew much about shepherds and sheep. It's like someone in this modern world saying, " I am the good ceo and you are my employees" or something similiar.
