Please, I have already thought of several clever and absurd answers...does anyone know for a fact?

The name comes from the packaging of liquors/beer in brown paper, tied with string, to make it easier for the woman to carry home to her husband. And no, i'm not being sexist, women used to be responsible for running household errands, and that was one of them. Interestingly enough, the standard of a '6-pack' of beer is of the same origin- it is the right size for a woman to be able to carry home.

I am interested to know where you are from that you've heard this phrase. I'm from Connecticut, in the U.S. and that's what we call them there, but as i've moved around the country, nobody seems to know what i'm talking about when i call it that.

they put the bottles in brown paper bags...."Packages" and if you look on some of the older stores the sign still say "package liquor"
