I have no idea if it's true, but someone told me it's illegal to make or sell mead in some states (or all of them; he wasn't sure). I actually had a friend in Wales send me some based on that knowledge. It was so good I thought it was worth investigating. Anyone know?

It is not true...mead is not illegal anywhere in the US. Now, it might be hard to find in a lot of places because there isn't a high demand for it. As such, many smaller places won't carry something that's going to sit on the shelves for months at a time.

If you're looking for some good mead, check out this place in Colorado:

Mead is usually an intensely sweet wine. As good as some are it really is better drunk by itself and not with food.
Most corked wines have and alcohol content of 9 - 15% or more but mead can be 6 - 10% and is mainly sold as a novelty item.
Although I love the idea of wine made from honey, I really don't have much respect or desire to drink it again.
Gimme a good strong red Zinfandel, please!

Mead or honey wine can be made for personal consumption like any other wine. Selling it would be illegal, mostly because the government wants there share of your profits and the revenue agents will come and blow up your still.

Jack-booted thugs expect to collect the revenue from your hooch.

in New Jersey, it's legal. i don't see any reason why it should be banned, it's fermented from honey not crack or anything. plus, it's a sweet dessert wine with fairly low alcohol content, around 6-10%. wine usually is about 14%.

we sell it in the store i work at.
