buy a babysitter, she may not drink, but i am sure a fun night out without the kids would be great for her, or you watch the child and get her a 1/2 hour massage. thomas

a few ideas 1) go out and have a nice meal 2) go to some bar/club. they know how to treat people who are having birthdays, especially if they're turning 21 3) buy her some alcohol. i would buy some Dragonberry Bacardi and mix it with some Sprite or 7up. its extremely smooth when made right 4) some jewelry also giving a nice card is a given. i'd say that's the best way to express the way you feel about her. try doing a poem if you can and make it a tearjerker. i'm sure there are a lot of other great ideas. if it was my birthday, i'd be content with a card and some weed. don't care for money to be honest.

You mentioned shes a vegetarian - I would say you could donate money to peta on her behalf. Or to the green party.
I think the standard gift for the 21st bday is drinks....maybe get a 2 martini glasses...some vodka and make a gift basket!?
I know its always nice when I get giftcards for restuarants....I dont know where you are in the country but Fresh Choice is always good. That way she could take her daughter.
Just some ideas. Hope it helps

I know that some people think of gift cards as impersonal, but considering she is a student, and has a child--she probably would love be able to purchase what she really wants or needs.
The personal part could be the birthday card you choose for her.

A 21 year old college student with a 2-year old daughter? I would guess that she doesn't have any time for herself, so I'd look for something which pampers her, or something which saves her time. There's a place near me that does $30 massages, or you could pay for a babysitter for a few hours so that she can get some time to herself.

Since she has a child, maybe a good gift would be to arrange and pay for a babysitter so she can go out for a few hours. Or, if she already has that figured out, maybe you can give her a "voucher" for another night of babysitting.
Some other ideas:
Gift certificate for a massage at a spa.
Netflix membership.

You said 'do drink' so presuming that means she does drink how about a bottle of champagne? Or if she doesn't drink what about a bottle of bubble bath that looks like a bottle of champagne so she can relax seeing she's a student and a mum who probably doen't get much time to relax.

If she is just a friend, you may not want to give her jewelry or flowers as that can give the wrong idea. Safe things to give are:
1)Books
2)DVDs (since you are friends you probably know what her favorite movie is)
3)Something she can enjoy with her daughter
