Some people need some quick advice about what to do when their doctor's office is closed and an ER visit is out of the question. Some people need advice on what kind of doctor to see (like a dentist or an oral surgeon). Some people just want support, and to know that there are others out there who have gone through the same things they have gone through. There can be a lot of reasons why someone would ask medical questions on Yahoo answers. However, everyone should remember that even if you get an answer that sounds like a good diagnosis, people need to see their doctor. Yahoo Answers cannot substitute a trip to the doctor's office.

Not everyone has a doctor or health insurance, and most doctors do not take inquiry phone calls. If you are wondering about a minor health problem, it would be silly to make and plan for a doctor's appointment, take off work and pay for it all just to ask a question that someone who has experienced the same ailment can answer on the web for free in a minute or two.

Good question. Most of my answers are "call your doctor".
Today I answered a question from a mom whose kid was infected for a month and had pus. I told her if she didn't bring her child in and he lost his vision, she'd be explaining her parenting skills to the department of social services. It is criminal neglect to allow a child, elder or an animal in your care to suffer by not accessing available treatment. Not affording it is no excuse because there are facillities that will see you for free/discounted fee.
It boggles me how many people would rather sit online then do something about an illness.
I totally understand people who want to compare how they are managing a condition, but the ones who want the average joe on the net to diagnose and cure them really amaze me. What happens when someone recommends cyanide?!
Thanks for letting me vent! I agree with you 100%- Pick up the phone and make the call!:)

Liz is right...MANY MANY Americans do not have health insurance and are living paycheck to paycheck. Now if a child is involved then obviously take them to the ER if needed. But, when I was younger I had to choose between putting food in my kids bellies or me going to the dr. What would you do. Please ppl get off your high horses. Not everyone has insurance and most of them make too much money to get any kind of help from the government.

Have you tried calling your friendly neighborhood doc lately? You have to make an appointment for a conference and drag your bag of gold behind you. That's just the way it is today. You would have better luck visiting your local health department.

Some people feel they can ask questions that they would be embarrassed asking face to face.

The ones that bother me are they ones who play eMD and give wrong advice.

Maybe they are asking for people who may know about or have the same medical condition to fill them in while they wait to get to see the Dr.

That's the question of the year. Perhaps they're trying to get something for nothing. But if they listen to unlicensed amateurs (and this includes receptionists, medical assistants and nurse aides) they end up getting nothing for nothing.

Not all people are smart enough to realize that they can call the doc and talk to his nurse and get a response the same day.

Probably because the doctor is going to say they need to come in and they probably don't want to pay.
