Define expensive. It could be anywhere from $70 to $600, depending on area of the country and the shop that does the work, and the extent of the repair needed on the exhaust system.
Also, when a g-g-girl take a car in, she gets charged the maximum rate, which drives the price up.
First, open the phone book to the auto repair section and get a quote on the u-joints, and call muffler shops for the quotes on the exhaust. Just ask what a new muffler will cost to get installed, and that will give you some idea who is most reasonable in your area. Best of luck.

The universal joints allow the drive shaft to flex and continue to transmit power from the transmission to the drive axles as the vehicle rolls down an uneven road. Not fixing the u-joint is even more expensive. The exhaust leak could be any of several things from a blown gasket to a rusted out pipe or muffler. The expensive part of the exhaust system is the catalytic converter.

i own a repair shop, and the u-joints aren't too expensive to repair ,but the exhaust leak can be anything, the joints can cost around 40 bucks a piece to have put in,so id count the bad ones, its hard telling how many bad ones you have in it,since there's two drive shafts in that thing, you could have all 4 of them bad in it,you might want to have it checked to actually see what all it needs done to it,good luck with it.

its been my experience in the business that u joints should run no more that 125.00 but the exhaust leak depends on the damage to the system, where the leak is, and what they have to do to fix it. the cost to fix a leaky exhaust could run from 100.00 up to about 800.00 depending on the criterea above.

the u joints will probably be the cheapest the exhaust leak is gonna be expensive unless its like a doughnut gasket that connects manifold to y pipe thats ceap but if your manifold is cracked then you are going to have some problems.
