This is not as silly a question as it might seem. In fact, there has been talk for years of a waiver that would allow Koreans to travel to Guam, Alaska and Hawaii without visas. The idea has always stalled due to the fact that then Americans would then have to produce passports to travel to and from those places, and the State Department believes that is unacceptable.

You don't need a passport to travel from California to Hawaii - Hawaii is a US state, just like California, New York, and Alaska. You only need a passport to travel internationally. However, you do need "valid (not expired), government-issued photo ID" to fly (unless you are 16 or younger and traveling with your parents). A passport is certainly "government-issued photo ID, but it should be easier and cheaper to get a state ID card from wherever you live. They are usually issued at the same office as driving licenses. At least one parent will have to go with you to the office If you are a minor, and you will need an official copy of your birth certificate plus (probably) an original Social Security card. Note that school IDs are not usually accepted for air travel, even if they are issued by a public school system (which is a government agency). Good luck!

No, Hawaii is a state, not sure why anyone would think they would need a passport.

As long as you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, I don't believe you do. Hawaii is a U.S. state as much as California or Nebraska.
