Is your family religious and if so, do they know, and how did they deal with it?

I have to say that it feels good to be speaking with fellow atheists.

When I was much younger, I was raised in a very conservative area and I felt so alone.

I'm an atheist. My parents are fundies as are most of my family. The jerky ones dealt with it in a jerky way. The nice ones remained nice.

Me. Southern Baptist family. My siblings and a few cousins know and they are ok with it. I have not told my parents and I probably will not. At least not my dad. He is a very spiritual, christian man. His health is not good, he had a triple bypass a year ago and has several other health issues. I just think it would serve no purpose to tell him. I may tell my mom at some point. But that is still iffy. My friends know and they are fine with it. I have not told my co-workers but religion is not an issue where I work so I don't feel pressed to tell them. I did want my friends and as much family as possible to know. You know it's kind of like coming out of the proverbial closet to tell people you are an atheist. You just never know how they will take it.

Everybody in my family has a different faith. We never discuss religion. When we all get together for our reunion, some people go to church on Sunday and some don't. Absolutely nothing is said about it. They would be very concerned if they knew that I am atheist. It would worry them so I just don't let on. Why worry the people who love you?

My family knows that I am an atheist. They know that I don't believe that god will do and therefore, I always go on doing for my family and they reciprocate happily. It is good to talk to fellow atheists but only to those who believe in themselves and make things possible for self and also for others, not waiting and praying god to do.

I'm an atheist.

I told my family that I was gay and an atheist on the same day. In retrospect, that might have been a bad idea, but one announcement brought up the other issue.

We don't talk now.

As a British atheist I have yet to meet a member of my or any others family who would have a problem with atheism, quite the reverse.

Now I lve in New York it has yet to come up.

Atheist here too. From a Catholic family... I don't broadcast it, as my family rarely gets into religious discussions. Whe they do, it is easy to stay neutral... you might say I'm not ready to come out too strongly.

Atheist here.

My immediate family is Catholic.

My mother is still convinced that I'm going to heaven. She's sure that if I'm a good person, God will "let me in" despite my non-belief.
