First of all I would suggest that you would educate yourself about the disorder. There are some good books out there on it. Then talk to your husband about his behavior (no blaming though) and how you see it might be bipolar. You can suggest that he talk to his doctor about it, and it sounds like it is a possibility since it runs in his family. Unfortunately you need to be prepared that your husband won't listen to you. He might not be ready to accept that he struggles with the disorder like his father and brother have. Give him time but continue to support and gently encourage him to seek help. Your husband is not going to change until he wants to. Good luck.

Men are suborn, so educate yourself about it as best you can. After that gentle nudge, poke and prod. You might want to print out a questionnaire that you can get on-line and give it to him. Leave quick, easy to read literature around the house. Any little thing you can think of that is subtle can help. It took me until i was 29 before i got help and started having problems at 16.That was only after I got hospitalized for going into a drug induced psychosis/agitated depression due to other medical problems. Good luck and best wishes to you. Hope it doesn't take a crisis to get him help.

Honey - get ready. I finally had my thoughts after 7 years recognized when he had a nervous breakdown. He came to me in tears and asked me to check his in to a psych ward for the weekend. They diagnosed him there. I am glad for that, at least now I know he is not just a mean person, he's sick. However, I have not been able to get him to the dr to get on the mood drugs he needs to stablize him. Even though he is on an anti-depressant now, he still swings!!!! It is a roller coaster ride. All I can really tell you is gently nudge, hold on, and pray every day for the strength to get through another day. Best of luck to you. I'll be praying for you.

Need to do testing. It is usually a lithium imbalance in the
brain and it can be treated.
