I have seen two, both in country Victoria.

That was Grampians mountain range, and Mt. Wendouree outside of Ballarat. My parents live in Portland, and they say there are heaps there, you see them running down the street sometimes.

But I have lived in oz all my life and only seen 2 in the wild. They sleep all day high in the trees the lazy bastards!!

Mostly in Victoria... The Healsville sanctuary is about 50 miles North of Mebourne and Philip Island (also known for penguins) is about 60 miles Southeast. If you go to either of these locations you will be SURE to see one in their natural habitat. There's plenty of them in the bush, but they are usually asleep in a tree and hard to spot. It's interesting to note that of the more than 1000 varieties of Eucaliptus tree in Australia, the koala can only eat the leaves of 2 or 3 different types. Zoo's around the world have to import the right trees to maintain a koala colony. They have a huge appendix to deal with the alcohol and otherwise poisonous saps frrom these trees. Yes... they are snockered most of the time which contibutes to their lethargic behavior.

My husband and I stayed in a cabin at Koala Shores holiday park at Lemon Tree Passage near Port Stephens NSW. We came out onto our balcony to eat our meal and there was a German tourist taking photos of the tree outside our cabin. We looked up and there was a koala there. The staff at the park said the koalas always come there. It is the first and only time in my life I have ever seen a koala in the wild. Their website is www.koalashores.com.au The Featherdale Wildlife Park in Blacktown NSW is good if you don't mind seeing them at a zoo. They have a few koalas for patting and photographing with and young ones. They also have a cool python you can hold!

Any zoo... Western Plains, Taronga, Featherdale Wildlife Park, etc. You may be lucky to spot one having a snooze up a Gum Tree...got to be very lucky though. With all the bush fires at the moment the Koala population has decreased.
