Mandriva was always targeted toward businesses more than home computers, and I never found it to be very useful at home.
I answered your last question also... if you want to talk about Linux, IM me. Your questions are really broad and hard to answer here.

Linux is an open-sourced OS, the source codes are freely available if you ever want it. It is quite complete OS not just some hobby project that was a one-man job from nowhere and nor does it work like a DOS from the '80s. Mandriva brand is a good starting point.

Very big difference, if you dont know about linux you better do some good reading. Or you will be totally lost. It does have some GUI Interface, but the commands are different. Read before you install it. You can try looking up like linux help or get the Linux for Dummies book. Linux is a more secure system than windows. But you are limited on use. If you switch to linux, you need to totally forget windows. Its faster but does take some knowledge or you will be lost.

Linux is popular because it is free and superior in many ways to Windows. Security and stability are much better in Linux. Many distributions of Linux can run live from the CD without installing anything. Many come with a suite of Office software, multimedia software and much more. The easiest Linux distributions for beginners are Freespire, Xandros, SimplyMepis and Symphony. Try it, you won't regret it!

To me Linux and its cousins if you will are the ultimate in computing. Everything is free from image editing with the GIMP (as opposed to the pricey photoshop) to playing movies with mplayer to running your database server with MySql and Postgresql (as opposed to the pricey SqlServer. If you really want to save some money dig in or else dig in your wallet.
