It's mostly just better graphics and a new look. I've seen preview laptops with Vista and they do look very nice. A few new screensavers, layouts, etc. You can add Vista to your existing computer, but it would cost a few hundred bucks, and you'd wanna make sure you have at LEAST 1 GB of RAM and a fast enough processor (along with a sufficient video card) because otherwise your computer will run really slowly. You'll be fine with XP, but Vista just looks cooler.

Its a bit different, Graphics and such. More secure from reports. Depending on how old you PC is, you might be able to upgrade. You can follow the link below to the vista site and in the middle there is options that show min requirements.

There are a lot of new things that you system wait upon. But it come with higher expectation for the hardware reqirement.
If you have machine that is older than 1 year old, I will recommend to get a brand new machine for Vista. At least, you need not to upgrade to many of things.

Just more security, and some other enhancements. But it's a hog on system resources. You need a pretty high end system to run it smoothly. It's not worth it to upgrade yet. Wait a year or two so they can work out the bugs.

Vista is a quick hook up of the Mac OS. It has a realtime search bar for every application. Your able to view you windows in tumbnails and select the one u'd like to bring to the front. It also has a dash board with wigets.

Check out PC World's review giving pros and cons at www.pcworld.com
Their main thrust is that it may be better to wait until software companies do patches for apps and drivers etc and it is VERY resource hungry

Style over substance. If you are happy with XP, don't bother.
