There is no purpose of the universe. There doesn't need to be a why.

What difference does it make? And, more to the point, what reason is there to think that there should be?
Even if there is some ‘other-worldly’ purpose, we can never know what is. Therefore, whatever purpose anyone makes-up is just that, made up – and it is no more or less credible than any other made-up purpose.
It is well documented that the unknown causes people to experience fear, and one way to deal with that fear is to find a way to control the thing that scares you and perceived knowledge (whether or not it is true) of a thing is a form of control.
Would it really make a difference in your life if there were no purpose? Would you pursue a different career or marry a different person? If so, then maybe you should think about making those changes anyway, if they are what will fulfill your life – for you.

Well, you're getting into the realm of philosophy here, so this might get a little subjective.
I feel the purpose of our universe is the same as the purpose of all lifeforms - to procreate and create additional life. If our 'universe' is merely a cell of a much larger construct, then all that we perceive in space could merely be the miniscule workings of a much larger lifeform. This lifeform could possibly divide like cellular life does. M-Theory suggests new 'universes' may be formed by the collisions of branes in multi-dimensional space.
I know all this seems far-fetched, but look at it this way. We have life that exists that is MUCH smaller than us [single-celled creatures]. So, why can't there be life that we're the microscopic entities in comparison to?

It really is a question to which if you pay close attention, you will get pretty much the exact same response when Christians are asked "Well who made God?" or "Why does God exist?" The answer is "it just is" or it just was" Yet when Christians say the God has always existed, they have such a hard time believing that. Talk about something that doesn't make a lot of sense. I guarantee that if I were to ask "where did the thigns needed for life to deveolp come from?" There would be no answer because we aren't able to answer that yet or it was always here. Honestly these people use the same logic that we do but in the end it makes the most sense to them....I don't get it.

Why does everything have to have a purpose? I don't get why Christians think that everything has to have a purpose. Everything can be explained, but that's not the same things as having a purpose.

that is a very interesting question.
i think we are all the equivilent to germs on an orange. we will be wiped out as soon as some one picks us or we drop to the ground, or the farmer sprays or any other way a germ can be destroyed.
but in a smaller sense i think the meaning of life is to be happy. the purpouse of life i do not know but every thing is there for a reason.maybe the purpouse of the universe is for one soul to understand something, maybe the universe has already served its purpouse, maybe it will not serve its purpouse until it is destroyed.
i hope this helps!

Why in the world do believers think this is a meaningful question? It's just nonsense. The universe doesn't have a purpose, and it doesn't need one in order to exist, and I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would assume that it does.

The universe is. It is evidence that the universe exists. It is not evidence of a creator nor evidence of a deliberate design.
Do you feel your life is pointless without a "divine purpose?" Why?

whether or not the universe exists bears no relationship on whether or not the universe has a "purpose", a rock exists, does a rock have a "purpose"? no
