The mom says the child wants to, but I think it was an idea put in their head by the mother. Would a 9 year old seriously WANT this? The child is named after a sibling of the father who died before the child was born, to honor and in remembrance of the sibling. So changing the name is going to break Grandmas heart and the dads heart... opinions please.

The name she has is not a bad name- its a pretty name, and so is what she wants to change it to. The mom is not explaining the significance of her given name- which by the way she agreed to 9 years ago!!!!

I agree.
It seems like something that was pushed onto the little girl.
She just 9 why would she give up her fathers name if he is still s part of her life.
Children are easily influenced especially by some one they trust and love

It depends on the child and the name. When I was 9, I hated my name (Rebecca, or Becky) and I desprately wanted it to be something different, like Vivian or Georgette. But now I like my name, and I'm glad no one took me seriously about the name change. I would hate to be Georgette, and I don't even know where I heard that awful name.
But when my mom was 9, she hated her name, too. The major difference was that her name was LaVerne, after her father, Vernon. When she was just a little older, sometime around 15, it was legally changed to Jamie.
So if the name is something old-fashioned or unusual, then the child could very well have a good point. But if it's the mom's suggestion or just a childish whim, she'll stop talking about changing it soon.

Depends on how bad the name is. If it causes embarrassment to the 9 yr old - he could be asking. However, it probably is the mom. No body's heart is going to break, though. That is just crap that people like to use to guilt others. If the kid really wants it, he should find a nickname for now and do it when he gets older.

I don't know. I changed my name at 14, not legally, but I changed my first name... 9 does seem young to think of that

No, I don't think that a nine year old has the maturity to make this kind of decision. That should be left to adulthood. No kid gets to pick their own name. If she doesn't like her legal name then a nickname should suffice.
When I was nine I wanted to change my name Diana. I shudder at the thought now.

9 is a little too young to change a name. When I was 9 and if you asked me what I wanted to change it to, it probably would of been something like Smurfette! Kids that young really don't need to change their name!
