It is also the fact that the element of good is more in the creation than the element of evil. We all see that there are more people who are healthy than those who are sick. There are more that eat well then those who starve. There are more that live decent life then those who commit crimes. Goodness is the rule and evil is the exception. Virtue is the norm and sin is the aberration. Generally trees bear fruits, the flowers bloom, the winds move smoothly. .
This is a temporary world and every thing here has a time limit. When its times comes it will die, come to an end and finish. Neither the good things of this world are forever, nor the bad things eternal. We are here for a short time and we are being tested. Those who will pass this test they will find an eternal world that is perfect and permanent. Those who will fail this test they shall see the evil consequences of their sins and corruption.
How many times it happens that we are not careful and still we reach safely to our destinations. The way people drive in some cities, it is a miracle that more accidents do not happen and more people do not suffer. Allah says: (Allah) Most Gracious! 2- It is He Who has taught the Qur'an. 3- He has created man: 4- He has taught him speech (and Intelligence). 5- The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly) computed; 6- And the herbs and the trees both (alike) bow in adoration. 7- And the Firmament has He raised high, and He has set up the Balance (of Justice), 8- In order that you may not transgress (due) balance. 9- So establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance. 10- It is He Who has spread out the earth for (His) creatures. (al-Rahman 55:1-10)
Abu Yahya Suhaib bin Sinan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him".

this passage is referring to temptation. You might try reading this passage in a few other translations for a clearer understanding.
God will not tempt anyone.
Why do bad things happen to good people though?
Well, much of the bad that happens is because of what people do to other people. God gives everyone freedom so some use their freedom selfishly and it sometimes hurts others.
Beyond that though I think you have to examine what you define as bad. We see a 5 year old boy die in a car accident and we say why did this have to happen. Perhaps, the same boy would have been abused if he had lived and God was sparing him from it.
Just remember the following verse and love God, then you can be at peace
Rom 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense in Christianity. I am guessing that is because the part that explains it was edited or burned at the council of Nicea. I am not trying to insult Christianity as it is the predesessor to my faith. I just know God makes sense. And what I see in the Bible of today only pieces and parts make sense as a whole it is confusing.
Rock stars who thrive on immoral behavior make millions while little girls and boys die from cancer before they are old enough to walk or commit sin. If that is not a trial I don't know what is.
In Islam it is clear why. Allah(SWT) tests us through trial and with our wealth and our children.
He knows that some people turn to him in times of trial and some turn away. He also want to see if we properly forfill our obligations. We are required to give Charity. The more money you have the more charity you have to give. The less you have the less charity you have to pay. If you are poor you are not required. God tests you by trial to see if you will turn to him. And he only tests those that he loves(and yes he loves those of all faith who have the intention to submit to him)
Also hardship is a mercy as it erases sin. For example if a old woman led a basic good life but committed some sins that she did not ask for forgiveness from. God in his mercy might make her have a difficult death. This would erase some of her sins so she could pay for them in this life so she would not have to pay for them in the next.
And that rock star. Well that seems simple to me, though I have never seen it exactly spelled out this way, this is how I see it. God has promised he will compensate us for the good we do and things as small as a smile are considered good deeds. Since the rock star is so immoral he probably will not make it to Heaven. So to forfil his promise God is giving him his compensation here in this life. But he will have none for the hereafter.
And the question is do you want your reward now or in the hereafter. I know you are not Muslim, but It make more sense than a young childs desire causing cancer. And if you look hard enough I think you will find similar ideas in the Bible and Torrah(old testiment)

We live in a sinful world. Our sinfulness is what brings our misery. Our sinfulness is the source of our pain, and our death. God, in His perfect justice, has every right to destroy all of us. However, in His perfect mercy, He spares us, and loves us. Our sin He allows so that we may be taught to let go of those things that hurt us, that sicken us, no matter how beautiful they look on the outside. He allows sin so that we may be given to chance to learn to turn ourselves over to Him, which means turning ourselves over to life and perfection. These sinful things we suffer, but if we learn to move away from them and look underneath at what God is trying to teach us, then we see the blessings of His love, and His mercy.

God allows bad things to happen to good people for several reasons. By experiencing the death of a loved one, you can better sympathize with someone else when they go through that. Sometimes, bad things will happen in order to humble you. Suffering can help you to realize you aren't in control of your life and it can bring you closer to God.

bad things and good things happen to everybody. "the rain falls on the just and the unjust".
Christians get tested, as faith needs to grow. it starts off like a mustard tree, then blossoms over time into a full tree. time may vary. also, you reap what you sow. you do bad, eventually something bad'll happen to you. it's just the way the world works.
and I don't think it's God's job to make sure that bad things don't happen. if we're sinful, he can help us change, but have to want the change ourselves. And, as some doctrines profess, we limit our access to God when we break His commandments or don't give the tithes, have little faith, etc.

Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
1 Thess 3:3That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.
4For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.
If bad things only happened to bad people, how would we learn compassion and mercy? Who would care about anyone?

Nothing bad can occur to good people.
Immature people see what they don't like as bad things, while the mature ones, the beloved of the One True God, see all things as divine blessings. For Saint Peter, poverty, persecution, death...are the greatest favours of God in his eternal life. It is extremely bad to do bad things, but it is very good to receive them on the Path of God.

Antelope doesn't eat Lions, Lions eat Antelopes... so if it becomes a sin for the Lion to eat the Antelopes then God would have allowed Satan to have it His way!
So let the 'desire' have it his way to have God lived in his peaceful way! And if and only if, 'desire' will becomes a sin, then you have let Satan have it His ways.

God doesn't allow bad things happen, most people don't really know what He has done for them, taking all of mans hardship and paying the price for their sin. quit blaming God for mans short comings
