WWD is basically correct, but it is also seen in pre-school and school age children. Affected children may get very anxious boarding the school bus, or at breakfast, or even the night before. Most improve once they are at school. Separation anxiety may be difficult to separate from school phobia.

Separation anxiety is when a person has a great, irrational fear of being away from another person.

I can give you a personal experience. When I got divorced ( a friendly one), and my husband moved out, my 3 year old daughter was constantly wanting to be with me. She followed me from room to room. When she woke up in the morning, she would scream for me, making sure I was still there. She would often times wake in the middle of the night and come to sleep with me.

Sometimes, she would go with my mom or sister , either to the store, or on a sleepover, and cry to come home to me.
Once, I told her I was going out to shovel the walk, and she could watch me out the window. When I came back in, she was nowhere to be found. I called and looked for her, then noticed the front door was open. ( I had gone out the front door, and shut it, and my walk goes around the corner of the house to the side door, which is the door I used to come back inside.) When I went around the corner, she could no longer see me, and had gone out the front door with slippers and an unzipped coat to try to find me. Well, she got stuck in a snow drift. It's funny now (7 years later). She had a fear of 'losing' her other parent, but her dad and I talked to her, and we made sure she knew that we were ALWAYS available to her.

It took a few years for her to get over it, being so young and all, but she is still a mama's girl. (Unless I tell her no, then she's a Daddy's girl)

A little kid doesn't like being away from mama. Simple as that. It's a perfectly normal phase for rug rats.
