Unfortunately, this is not something that you can decide for yourself. Certainly you can try what I would call " careful self care," -- meaning maintaining a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep and making time for self care (doing things that you enjoy doing, spending quality time with friends and family, exercising regularly, etc.). To understand more about your condition, you might also want to read books about depression. Ultimately, if things don't improve within a few weeks it is extremely important you see a doctor, as this is a condition that carries a one-in-five chance of fatality through suicide. If you are having any severe symptoms where you are having trouble functioning or having suicidal thoughts, it becomes overwhelmingly important that you see a doctor as quickly as possible. He or she in fact may not prescribe medication, but may have you see a therapist. Your doctor may also diagnose a medical condition contributing to depression. I have always been amazed at how frequently medical problems are in fact causative, or at least contribute, to depression. This is not something you should be working on yourself. Please have it evaluated

A good start is to talk about it with someone you trust and you know can guide you in the proper directing of getting help. The important people and the first support group are family and friends. You have started on your way of getting relief by acknowledging it. Informing yourself about depression is helpful through reading and perhaps a support group. Keep up with making an effort because that is a good way to learn how to deal with depression on a day to day basis.. My husband suffers from depression and has had success with St. John's Wart. It's a vitamin supplement found just about anywhere. If that doesn't work for you, perhaps discuss it with your doc and see if perhaps you need something a tiny bit stronger. Because your asking the question tells me that you're not so far gone that the St John's Wart wont work for you. Good luck.

its up to you how you want to handle it. some people do say that using antidepressants makes things worse, that has not been the case for me. you can try therapy, some people try praying and some people try medicine. there are a lot of things that you can try. i wouldnt recomend getting a dog or a cat because right now your not in the best state of mind
good luck!
