I recently bought a new computer desk, and in the process of relocating my computer, I totally unplugged everything from it and put it back together again. I'm pretty sure everything's plugged in where it's supposed to be, and I checked that there aren't any loose plugs. But even so, my speakers are about half as loud as they used to be. Could there be a short in the wires? There's no fading or crackling in the sound.

Two things:

1) Make sure you are using the correct jack on your sound card. Sometimes there is a line out for powered and unpowered speakers.

2) Also, check to see if your volume is at ample levels on the application, speakers and sound card level.

Sounds like you plugs are worn out, or your speakers are just ready to retire. I'd use this free $500 Best Buy gift card and buy some high quality sounding speakers to replace them with! http://www.timsfreestuff.com/63 I bought myself a DVD player with this!

Go to the tool bar on the bottom and see if you see the volume icon and right and left click to see if you turned the volume down.
