Originally, any ban on an edible substance was because it was viewed as unsafe to consume.
Anything that can cause illness was usually frowned upon.

There are many parts of the world where hygiene is a serious problem. When conditions are clean and pigs are well cared for, disease is less of a problem. It's understandable why many religions "banned" pork because of disease organisms. However, if meat is cooked properly, most of those pathogens are destroyed. Also, the research into using hogs for transplants is quite interesting, so it would seem a shame to preclude a group of people that might benefit from this. Perhaps in time, when conditions change, banning pork, etc. might be unnecessary.

At the time pork was banned (by a few religions) refrigeration was cost prohibitive. Pork is especially prone to fatal spoiling. Concurrently, pigs require a great deal of resouces to raise for consumption and was another cost prohibited enterprise.

First off Muslims did not "ban Pork" God did. He banned pork from the beginning with Jews and Jesus did not eat Pork as he was Jewish.
God banned us from eating any carnavors. Pigs appear to be herbavors but they also eat meat and anything else for that matter and they do not sweat like most animals so they store toxins in their bodies. They are discusting animals here is an article that may help.
Do pigs sweat?
Yes, but not very well. They hardly have any sweat glands. That's why they like to roll around in mud. It cools them off, plus the dried mud on their skin acts as a sort of sunscreen.
I have always heard that pigs are very tidy animals. Why are they considered unclean in Judaism and Islam?
It is true that pigs are good housekeepers. However, this fastidiousness does not carry over to their diets. You've heard the phrase "slop the hogs," haven't you?
Pigs, left to their own devices, will eat just about anything. And over the centuries they usually were left to their own devices. They would just be turned out to forage on their own. They are scavengers of the first order.
In addition to the usual stuff, pigs will eat garbage, carrion, feces and other stuff you don't even want to think about. The Talmud considers a pig to be little better than "a walking toilet" and at some points can't even bear to use the words pig or swine and just refers to them as "something else."
Now you take your cow. Your cow and some other animals have the ability to filter out toxins in the stomach. Your pig can't do that. So most of the toxins it takes in end up being stored in its meat or fat. That's why in the days before coolers and meat inspections and modern meat-processing techniques, pork was often associated with parasitic diseases such as trichinosis.
So the ancient Jews and Muslims knew what they were talking about when they swore off pork.
And as far as pets. I love my Billy (kitty). We keep dogs outside so they do not soil our carpets and homes. But they are not "banned" as you called it.

They follow the rules for food originally set out for Jews in the Talmud. The Christians no longer keep Kosher, as it's called, because they believe the Gospel represents a new covenant with God.
I believe the pig was particularly subject to disease that could affect humans in ancient times. So because medicine and sanitation weren't very developed, it was decided it was best not to eat that meat.

It is in the Old Testament not to eat swine which is pork, and really it isn't good for you. I think you all need to talk to some butchers about what they have see when it comes to butchering pigs. I doubt if any of you would eat it. Try not eating any pork for 6 months to a year to cleanse your body from it, then try eating it. I guarantee you'll get sick.

In their religion it is considered unclean, just like in Judaism.
The real reason for this is because there is a bacteria that develops in pork in hot climates and in ancient times they did not know how to properly cook it so they just avoided it for safety. The best way to stop people from eating pork was to say "God doesn't like it."

The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well known. The following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:
1. Pork prohibited in Qur’an
The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.
"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." [Al-Qur’an 5:3]
The above verses of the Holy Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.
2. Pork prohibited in the Bible
The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus
"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you".
"Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you."
[Leviticus 11:7-8]
Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy
"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass."
[Deuteronomy 14:8]
A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.
3. Consumption of pork causes several diseases
The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases. A person can have various helminthes like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man’s terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack, if it enters the eye it can cause blindness, if it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.
Another dangerous helminthes is Trichura Tichurasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.
4. Pork has fat building material
Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.
5. Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth
The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs.
Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta.
6. Pig is the most shameless animal
The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. In America, most people consume pork. Many times after dance parties, they have swapping of wives; i.e. many say "you sleep with my wife and I will sleep with your wife." If you eat pigs then you behave like pigs. We Indians look upon America to be very advanced and sophisticated. Whatever they do, we follow after a few years. According to an article in Island magazine, this practice of swapping wives has become common in the affluent circles of Bombay.
