The first day I had it I had drove for about 2 hours with it, when it first failed, I lost the rpm gauge, mileage gauge, temp gauge and fuel gauge, luckily I was headed home. The next morning when I started the car, everything worked but the check engine light had come on and stayed on until tonight. I stopped at the gas station to make a purchase and when I left to get back out onto the road, my gauges quit working again, but I noticed that the check engine light had gone out. What is causing this and would it be expensive to fix.

Well it sounds like it's either a flaky computer or a wiring problem. Could be the wiring harness or the connectors. Look under the dash and disconnect then reconnect any connector you see. If you take it to a shop they may be able to analyze things for you.
Expense is hard to say but if it's intermittent wiring that's really hard to find sometimes. A computer could be expensive as well. If you have any type of warranty left use it now. If not, either deal with it and work around it until you get another car. Plan on spending the money to get it fixed. Lastly, trade it in for something else. Good luck.

Kinda late now, but if you got a 30 day guarantee, or something like that, you'd better take advantage of it. In the future, research a car before you buy it. There's a reason used Intrepids and Tauruses are so cheap.

You have an intermittent ground. Check the connectors going to the instrument panel.
