An MRI is usually ordered next if the x-rays don't show everything. It's just a glorified x-ray machine. Then if that still doesn't satisfy them they may want to do exploratory surgery. Hope that helps.

Well, the plain Xrays do show the bone. The other tissues are seen well by using an MRI. But, because of the high cost, the test is generally used as a pre-surgical planning test, not to diagnose arthritis, ligament tears, etc, that should be able to be diagnosed thru the dying art of the physical examination. Just one way to help control health care costs, IMHO

They will show mostly bone and cartilage, but less dense tissue will also show up faintly. Foreign objects and bone fragments will show up as well. There are newer technologies such as CT scans and MRI that will show much more detail in the soft tissues. Your doctor will request whichever sort of studies that might be needed. Sometimes more than one sort of study will be requested and comparisons of the results made to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

X-rays show bone and air. While they can be used to assist in the diagnosis of many conditions their use is limited as you cannot see any of the soft tissues such as ligaments, tendons, etc. To see this you would need to have an MRI, CT scan or other tests.

Xrays primarily show bone but can show shadows of other things.
If a shadow appears that is not normal, then a cat scan or mri would be ordered.
