Situation: Sitting next to girl flowers behind your back. Start making cell phone ringining noises. Put the flower to your ear "oh it's for you." That one went over pretty well.

"Hi" has worked well.
Commenting on something going on helped - in a bookstore, something I said about a book a woman was reading piqued her interest. In that same bookstore, I made a joke about the two wild kids that were wrestling right near the History section that caught a gal's attention.
I haven't used a "bad" pickup line, but to be sure, I've been simply brushed off countless times. Sometimes the eyes alone indicate such disinterest, that you just know there's no point in saying anything...
